The Legendary Remington 700 – A Timeless Rifle
A Rifle with a Long History
The Remington 700 has been around since 1962. Built on the legacy of the Remington 721 and 722 series, this bolt action rifle is a workhorse. Whether you’re a hunter, precision shooter or in law enforcement, the Remington 700 has a model for you.

Calibers for Every Shooter
One of the best things about the Remington 700? All the caliber options! It comes in:
- .30-06 Springfield
- 7mm Remington Magnum
- .308 Winchester
- And more!
From long range hunting to tactical use, this rifle can be set up for you.
Barrel Length and Threading – What You Need to Know
Customizing Your Barrel
The Remington 700 has barrel length and weight options. We recently worked on a .308 heavy barrel, cutting it down to 16.25 inches and threading it to 5/8×24. We’ve also threaded 7mm standard (tapered) barrels to 9/16×24—and the list keeps growing!
Why Barrel Diameter Matters for Threading
So what thread pitch should you use for your Remington 700? The answer depends on two things:
Caliber – Generally .30 caliber and above use 9/16×24 or larger.
Barrel Outside Diameter (OD) – The OD must be big enough for the threads.
-
- Bull barrels? You can pretty much choose your thread size.
- Light contour barrels? They might just meet the minimum OD for 9/16×24.
Why the Remington 700 is a Gunsmith’s Dream
One reason the Remington 700 is so popular? The round action is perfect for machining. The action mounts up nice and easy in a lathe’s 3-jaw chuck, making custom work and gunsmithing much easier—especially if you have a lathe with a long bed.## Removing a Remington 700 Barrel – Easier than You Think!
